AI development

Add AI to a website only where it helps

Choose one visitor problem and connect the feature to a useful next step.

Find a real point of friction

An AI feature should have a reason to exist beyond making the website sound modern. Consider whether visitors struggle to find the right service, understand a complex catalog or summarize a large document. If simple navigation or clearer copy resolves the problem, start there before adding another interface.

Give the feature a boundary

Define what information it uses and what it should not claim. A service assistant can help identify relevant offerings without inventing prices or promising delivery dates. Keep important business facts in a maintained source. Decide how the interface behaves when the question falls outside the available information.

Connect to the rest of the journey

The result should help the visitor take a meaningful next step: compare options, open a relevant page or prepare an inquiry. Avoid trapping useful content inside a conversation that cannot be revisited. Make the original website navigation available so users can choose a more direct path.

Review value after launch

Track whether the feature helps complete the intended task and where people abandon it. Read feedback and investigate common misunderstandings. Consider the work needed to maintain the feature, including changing content and usage controls. A small, dependable feature can be more valuable than a broad assistant that creates confusion.

Example: guide a visitor to the right service

A portfolio assistant might ask whether the visitor needs design, development or both, then direct them to a relevant service page. It can prepare a project brief based on the visitor’s answers. It should not invent a quote, claim a project has been accepted or guarantee a deadline. The final step can open a human conversation with the collected context. This gives the assistant a useful role while keeping commercial decisions with the person responsible for the work.

Choose the minimum useful context

Decide which pages or records the feature needs. A service guide may only require approved service descriptions and a few scope questions. It does not need unrestricted access to all customer communication. Keep the business content maintained in one place so the public pages and the assistant do not drift apart. When information changes, check the associated answers as well as the visible website copy.

Make the normal path work without AI

Visitors should still be able to browse services, read product details and contact the business directly. An assistant can help, but it should not become the only route to essential information. Plan a clear fallback for service interruptions. A user who cannot or does not want to interact with chat should not encounter a dead end. This also makes it easier to compare whether the AI feature adds value to the existing journey.

Review the outcome that matters

Choose a measure tied to the feature’s purpose, such as finding the correct service or preparing a sufficiently clear inquiry. Include negative outcomes: misleading answers, unnecessary steps and abandoned conversations. Inspect representative sessions with appropriate data handling. A large number of messages may indicate engagement, confusion or both. Interpret the activity in the context of the task before deciding that the feature deserves more space on the website.
